The cutout happens on your device

Most background removers upload your photo to a server, run it through a model there, and send the cutout back. This one runs the model in your own browser instead. The first time you use it, it quietly downloads a small open-source model, about four megabytes, and after that the work happens entirely on your machine. Your photo is never uploaded, there is no account, no watermark and no per-image limit. The trade for that is a short wait on the first run while the model loads, and a second or two per image after that.

It is powered by U²-Net, a well-regarded open model for isolating the main subject of an image, wrapped by the open-source modern-rembg library. Both are permissively licensed, which is why this can be genuinely free with nothing held back.

What it is good at, and where it struggles

It works best when there is a clear subject against a reasonably distinct background: a person, a product on a table, a single object. For those it produces a clean cutout on a transparent PNG that you can drop onto anything, or sit on a solid colour using the background control. Where any remover struggles, free or paid, is the fiddly bits: fine flyaway hair, fur, glass, smoke and near-transparent edges, and busy scenes where the subject blends into what is behind it. If the result is close but not perfect, it is often still a big head start on doing it by hand.
